Lycaste. Lycaste habitat extends from Mexico to Bolivia. Many are enchantingly fragrant. Though most are medium to large plants with very large flowers there are at least two small species. Since they grow in mid to high elevations and are at times even subjected to nighttime frosts, they were considered low light growing plants.

These orchids prefer temperatures to be consistent and stay in the range of 60-80°F. Deciduous Lycaste orchids are a bit tougher when it comes to temperatures and can tolerate much more heat. Up to 95°F is okay for these orchids. They also tolerate larger temperature shifts and are fine down to 50°F when dormant.

Feed lycaste orchids every other watering, using a water-soluble orchid fertilizer at half strength. Cut back to one feeding per month during the winter months. Repot lycaste orchids every year between early spring and early summer, when new growth is about 3 to 6 inches (8-15 cm.). Remove dead roots, along with old potting mix around the roots.

Temperatures for the evergreen species should be fairly constant and never hot. Nights of 60 F and days of 75 to 80 F are desirable. The deciduous species of lycaste can tolerate a wider range, up to 95 F during the day and down to 50 F at night when dormant in the winter. Water should be applied freely during active growth (usually summer).

Lycaste prefer a day temperature range between 68°F and 75°F (20°C to 24°C). At night there should be at least a 10°F (6°C) drop, as Lycaste enjoy nighttime lows from 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 16°C). This lower night temperature will help initiate flower buds in winter and promote stronger growth. Keep in mind, these are not frost.
